Rock and Roll Physics: Building Guitars from Scratch!

This project introduces students to the physics, design and process of building a guitar. Guitars are fascinating for many reasons, including the basics of how resonance works, to the engineering challenges, such as how to create a rigid structure which can withstand the hundred (+)pounds of torque generated by tightening the strings. With regard to physics, there are many fascinating conversations including fret placement, the purpose of sound holes (to allow sound to get in?.. or to let sound out?).. to placement of magnetic pickups, in the event the student wishes to construct an electric guitar.
